The pilot of an Air Astana plane from Kazakhstan requested from the Lisbon Airport permission to make an emergency landing amid stormy weather conditions on November 11.

The aircraft was heading to the former Soviet republic of Belarus when it was forced to land in Lisbon after its landing controls and navigation system failed.

Two F-16 planes from the Portuguese Air Force attempted to guide the Embraer 190 passenger plane towards Beja, 180 km southeast of Lisbon, but poor visibility and adverse weather conditions forced the plane to turn back towards the Portuguese capital.
