The European Commission announced on 20 June that €48.5 million in humanitarian assistance has been allocated for South Sudan, a country where nearly two million people are internally displaced and almost seven million are in need of emergency food aid.

The latest sum comes after the EU provided last week €1 million to step up Ebola prevention in the country.

The EU-funded humanitarian projects will address the protection of the most vulnerable, the provision of food, the provision of health care, as well as education programmes for children who lost out on years of schooling in conflict-affected areas.
